Flying with Baby on Lufthansa

Lufthansa is a popular choice for families. Here are the key rules and tips for flying with a baby.

Lap Infant: Costs and Rules

Children under 2 can sit on a parent’s lap with a loop belt attached to the adult’s seatbelt.

  • Domestic / Europe: approx. 10% of adult fare
  • Intercontinental: approx. 10% of adult fare + taxes/fees
  • Own seat: Book a child fare (approx. 75% of adult price) for a seat with an infant car seat

Baby Carry-On Allowance

As a lap infant, you can bring in addition to your own carry-on:

  • 1 carry-on bag for the baby (max. 8 kg)
  • Baby food and medication are exempt from the liquid rule

Stroller and Buggy

  • Gate-check available: Yes, you can take the stroller to the gate
  • Return: At the gate (jet bridge) or baggage claim — depends on the airport
  • Stroller is transported free of charge as special baggage

Bassinet

On long-haul flights, Lufthansa offers bassinets:

  • Available in: Bulkhead rows (first row after the partition)
  • Max. weight: approx. 14 kg / 75 cm
  • Reservation: By phone with Lufthansa, as early as possible
  • Cost: Free, but limited availability

Family Boarding

Lufthansa offers priority boarding for families with small children. You can board before most other passengers.

Car Seats

Approved car seats can be used on board if you’ve booked a separate seat for your child. Look for the “For use in aircraft” label.

Baby Meals

On long-haul flights, you can pre-order baby meals. At least 24 hours before departure via the Lufthansa website or phone.
